Echoes of History: “GYOXY (Gyokusai)” (玉砕) — The Shattered Jewel

The Japanese word “GYOXY (Gyokusai)” literally evokes the image of a precious jewel shattering into pieces. Its origin lies in an ancient Chinese expression: it is better to break like jade than to survive whole like an ordinary roof tile—a metaphor for choosing honor over a compromised existence.

During World War II, the word took on a devastatingly literal meaning in Japan. In 1943, Imperial General Headquarters first used “Gyokusai” to describe the destruction of the Japanese garrison on Attu Island. The poetic expression transformed military annihilation into the image of an honorable death and later became associated with battles in which surrender was rejected and soldiers fought until almost no one remained.

This design does not glorify that fate. It remembers the distance between the beauty of the word and the human cost behind it: lives lost, futures erased, and language used to turn tragedy into duty. “Gyokusai” is presented here as a warning from history—and as a vow never to repeat the devastation of war.

玉砕（ぎょくさい）— 砕け散る美しい玉

「玉砕」という言葉は、文字通り、美しい玉が砕け散る姿を表しています。その語源は中国の古典『北斉書』にあり、平凡な瓦として無事に生き残るよりも、尊い玉として砕けることを選ぶという、名誉を重んじる思想を表した言葉でした。

第二次世界大戦中、この言葉は日本で重く悲劇的な意味を持つようになります。1943年、大本営はアッツ島の日本軍守備隊がほぼ全滅した戦いを、初めて「玉砕」と発表しました。部隊の全滅を「名誉ある死」という美しいイメージに置き換え、その後は降伏を拒み、最後まで戦うことを表す言葉として広まっていきました。

このデザインは、その死を美化するものではありません。美しい言葉の裏側に存在した多くの命、失われた未来、そして悲劇を使命へと変えた言葉の力を記憶するためのものです。「玉砕」を歴史からの警告として捉え、二度と戦争の惨禍を繰り返さないという誓いを表現しています。
